Dubliner Sean St John has been on Twitter for more than 20 years and has more than 9.4 million followers.
The Cork-born centre-half is one of the most successful players in the Irish game.
He is the first player to reach that mark in the modern era.
His account has attracted a number of followers.
He also has the best Instagram account of all the players in his division.
But there is no denying the player’s immense popularity on social media.
His followers reach his 10,000 Twitter followers a day, and he is often quoted in the media as being the most influential person in the game.
That said, he is not above using Twitter for his own purposes.
He has used the service to voice his opinions on social issues, and has posted photographs of himself posing in front of a wall with a poster saying: “I like to make fun of the world.”
He has also been quoted as saying he “likes to make light of everything”.
The 32-year-old is one person who seems to have a way of making a splash on social networks.
He was among the stars of the World Cup and Euro 2016 when he tweeted a picture of himself with his wife after the match in Russia.
He captioned it: “Thanks to @marie_brian for making it a good day for our family.
The image made the rounds on social channels such as Instagram and Twitter.
He later removed it and apologised to the @marietbrian family.
St John is one player who seems not to be content with his limited social media reach.
He launched a Twitter account this week and has nearly 3,000 followers.
However, his account is not just focused on football.
He posted a picture on Monday of himself dressed up as a superhero with his arms around a woman.
He wrote: “The best superhero in the world.
He also posted a photo on Tuesday of himself as a character from The Avengers movie and asked fans to follow him on Twitter.
Twitter user Michael Tapper said St John’s Twitter account was a success because it was his way of engaging with fans.
“His account is a bit of a niche, but he is clearly enjoying his success,” Mr Tapper told RTE.
“The fact he is engaging with the people he loves on Twitter is a great sign that he has found a new way of getting the word out about what he is doing in his life.”
In addition to his own social media presence, St John also has an Instagram account and is a regular contributor to The Irish Times.
He tweets regularly on the Irish sports website, with an account called The Bannister’s Club.
“I have been following this story for about a year and a half now, and it’s really cool to see what it has been like to get to this point,” he said.
“It’s been very difficult for me to stay away from it for the last few years, but I think I’ve come to terms with it now.”
